Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
International terror listing and prosecution case
Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.
German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.
Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.
Trial details and international connections
Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.
In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.
Historical background and organizational structure
Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.
Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.
Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.
Previous convictions and global responses
A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.
The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.
“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
