Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
