A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in national works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
