A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

Yet the odds had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the early hours of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

A small number of other individuals also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the event betting space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
